Malaria Network

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasite infected female Anopheles mosquitos transmit Malaria to human. When an infected mosquito bites, the Plasmodium parasites travel from the mosquito’s saliva to the person’s blood. The parasites travel further to the human’s liver where they multiply. The parasites also destroy human red blood cells, in a massive number, after using them as a shelter. The patient experiences symptoms like fever, chills, nausea, headache, and body aches. The parasite activities in human body cause abnormalities in the patient’s blood and metabolism, which can proceed to failure of organs and death if unstopped.

Fortunately, malaria is a totally preventable and a curable disease if diagnosed and treated promptly and correctly. No one would contract malaria if not bitten by a mosquito. Removing pooled water can reduce the number of mosquitos dramatically. Spraying of insecticide helps reducing the number of malaria causing mosquitos. Insecticide treated bed net provides protection against malaria. Despite some resistance, most of the malaria patients can be cured with medicines. Vaccines against malaria are under way.

Despite these effective ways of prevention and treatment, and despite the global effort of prominent organizations like WHO, it is sad that we are still losing about one million lives every year. The World Health Organization estimates that each year 300-500 million cases of malaria occur and more than 1 million people die of malaria, especially in developing countries. Young children and pregnant women are at especially high risk.

We have to do more that we have done so far. Here at Malaria Network, we believe the power of collaboration. We believe the power of sharing ideas. We believe the power of regular people.

why learn a language?

Learning another language gives the learner the ability to step inside the mind and context of that other culture.

Without the ability to communicate and understand a culture on its own terms, true access to that culture is barred. Why is this important? In a world where nations and peoples are ever more dependent upon on another to supply goods and services, solve political disputes, and ensure international security, understanding other cultures is paramount. Lack of intercultural sensitivity can lead to mistrust and misunderstandings, to an inability to cooperate, negotiate, and compromise, and perhaps even to military confrontation. Intercultural understanding begins with individuals who have language abilities and who can thereby provide one's own nation or community with an insider's view into foreign cultures, who can understand foreign news sources, and give insights into other perspectives on international situations and current events. For survival in the global community, every nation needs such individuals. A person competent in other languages can bridge the gap between cultures, contribute to international diplomacy, promote national security and world peace, and successfully engage in international trade.

KUNG PANDA 2: The Greatest Movie Ever!

When Pixar first created the movie Toy Story, people knew the face of animation had been changed forever. Fast forward seventeen years and animation movies are still growing strong, even making as much revenue in theaters as regular movies. I have seen countless animation movies over the years, but none can compare to the sheer brilliance of Kung Panda 2 (KP2). I enjoy Kung Fu Panda because it is funny, emotional and revolutionary.

To begin with, I enjoy KP2 because it is funny. There have been many funny animation movies in the last 5 years, but none as funny as KP2. In fact, not even the first KP was as funny as KP2. I believe the reason why KP2 was so funny was because they chose the perfect voice cast. An example is of Seth Rogen, who was cast as the Mantis: he was hysterical. Without a doubt, KP2 employed many elements that made it hilarious and that is one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much.

Another reason why I enjoy KP2 was because it is emotional. Poe the Panda found himself questioning his identity because he did not know who his real parents were. Emotions were stirred because the audience got to share in Poe’s plight: witnessing him struggle to defeat a fairly simple foe. Many movies fail to evoke sheer emotion, but KP2 did so with very simple factors?for this reason, I truly enjoy seeing it.

Lastly, I enjoy KP2 because it is revolutionary. A number of years ago, the matrix introduced kung fu to the movie world with high intensity; similarly, KP2 has seamlessly brought kung fu to animation world. A number of animation movies have had action fused into them, but none done so well as KP2. Clearly, KP2 is revolutionary in its intentions and that is another reason why I enjoy it so much.

Kung Panda 2 is an animation movie I enjoy and I enjoy it because it is funny, emotional and revolutionary. If we fast-forward seventeen more years, we’ll discover that another movie changed the face of animation; but one thing we won’t find is a movie as enjoyable as Kung Fu Panda 2.
